Warren Church Pig Roast The Warren United Church held its Third Annual Pig Roast on Saturday, July 5th at 5 pm at the church in the heart of Warren Village. The Gaylord Farm provided two pigs roasted to perfection on site. Mary Laulis supervised preparation of home made beans, cole slaw, stewed apples and other accompaniments—all made from scratch. Hot dogs were available for younger children. Homemade desserts, soft drinks and coffee will complete the menu. Contributions were $12 for adults and $8 for children under 10. Also ask about our “family plan”. This year, proceeds will be split between the Vermont Campaign to End Childhood Hunger (VTCECH) and a school project in Pastopamba, Ecuador. Robert Dostis of the Campaign to End Childhood Hunger delivered the sermon at Warren Church on Sunday, June 29 where he told the congregation that 19,000 Vermont children often go to bed hungry—enough children to fill 380 yellow school buses! The VTCECH is a statewide nonprofit organization that combats hunger through advocacy, education, and technical assistance—providing communities with the tools to create and sustain local nutrition programs that feed the hungry. Programs include: school meals; summer meals and enrichment; cooking for life; Food Stamp outreach and education; child and adult care food program; and, education and advocacy. More information about VTCECH can be found on their website at www.vtnohunger.org. Pastopamba is a rural village in Southwest Ecuador so isolated that not even Google can find it. There are about 500 residents including about 80 children who eke out a living raising corn and bananas. Warren Church Pastor, Susan McKnight, spent part of her recent sabbatical in Pastopamba. A small contingent of Warren churchgoers joined her this past spring to help create a community garden. Amalia Veralli brought several cameras and her photographic skills to lead a photography program to document life in the village. A small contingent from Pastopamba visited the Warren Church this past Sunday to thank Susan and the congregation in person. A teacher from the Pastopamba school described the villagers as “very good, very kind, and very poor people.” “We hope for a successful fundraiser, of course, but just as important, we look forward to a an opportunity for our Valley neighbors and visitors to enjoy a Warren Church welcome at the ‘Little Church with the Big Heart’. We want everyone to leave filled with good food and warm fellowship,” said Coordinator Gary Crosby. To return to this gallery, use your browser's "back" button.
